• Flow-through humidifiers: these humidifiers send a steady stream of water through an evaporator pad, which distributes moisture into your HVAC system’s air so it can be spread throughout your home.
• Steam humidifiers: these humidifiers use an electric current to heat water until it evaporates into the air flowing through your ductwork and return vents.

You may need a humidifier in your HVAC system if you notice that the air in your home or building is dry, causing symptoms such as dry skin, nosebleeds, or static electricity.

Most whole-home humidifiers last anywhere from 12-15 years with proper care. However, the lifespan of your humidifier can vary depending on your usage and maintenance habits.

To keep your humidifier working efficiently for as long as possible, we recommend cleaning it once every couple of weeks during any season when you’re using it.

To clean a flow-through humidifier, follow these steps:

• Take the base off and remove the water inside
• Pour in a cup of white vinegar or cleaning solution, then let it soak for an hour
• Scrub the inside with a soft-bristled brush
  

To disinfect your humidifier after cleaning it, use a solution of cold water and bleach, then rinse the unit out with water and let it dry fully before turning it on again. This process will prevent bacteria or mold growth from compromising your humidifier’s effectiveness.
